About Martha and Her "Sinful" Sister, Mary.
The Bible tells us much about Mary and Martha and their brother Lazarus. Mary was known as a sinful woman, according to the Bible. Mary was the one who poured ointment on Jesus feet and wiped it off with her hair. One day, Martha invited Jesus to her home for lunch. Mary - was sitting at Jesus feet, feasting on His presence, listening to His every word. Martha, decided to accuse Jesus of not caring that she was doing all the work while Mary - her embarrasing, sinful sister - was not helping. Martha said, "TELL HER TO HELP ME?" Imagine the nerve of telling the Son of God off? That's what happens when (to borrow a phrase I heard somewhere) when we focus on the work of the Lord and not the Lord of the work. Martha's always think they are carrying the world on their shoulders and that nobody cares.
Jesus did not agree. Rather than explaining to Mary that she needed to go hep Martha....
Jesus replied by explaining to Martha that she was DISTRACTED by many things. The word He used infers perhaps overwhelmed by all the responsibilites of her life - not just today but as a general rule. He didn't say she was evil or sinful - but DISTRACTED.
DISTRACTION means there is something we SHOULD be focused on and instead something has caused us to look somewhere else.
BUT ONLY ONE THING MATTERS... according to Jesus.. Jesus got Life down to a very basic thing... He said, ONLY ONE THING MATTERS... and that Mary had chosen it.
What did Mary choose? Sitting at the feet of Jesus.
IAND IT WOULD NOT BE TAKEN FROM HER. BUT IT WAS A CHOICE. Mary made the CHOICE to sit at the feet of Jesus.
It's not that we shouldn't be busy doing the work of the Lord. It's the WORK of the LORD.. but we should never let it DISTRACT us from being in His presence, letting His love fill us, and letting His Spirit refresh us. . JESUS WELCOMES SINFUL WOMEN TO SIT AT HIS FEET. THIS IS GOOD NEWS FOR ME.
I wrote this song imagining Mary singing it... to Jesus. Honestly... it's me singing this song to Him.... .I want to CHOOSE to sit at His feet.. Every day. All day.
